Russian POWs fighting in Montenegro 1916-18 ?
Sent: 15-11-2013 19:37

Hello,

just been having a look at "Serbias great war 1914-18" by Andreij Mitrovic , which mentions that escaped Russian prisoners of war joined and fought with the Montenegrin armed resistance/partisans from 1917, in the "little war".
Never heard of this before , has anyone come across any mention of it ?

Pete.

Alas Pete. Specifically these events I do not know. But I do not see anything unusual. During the Second World War, the former Russian POWs fought in the resistance groups across Europe.

Hello,

the only information i have found mentions that by 1918 the Montenegrin resistance went on the offensive against the Austrians, crossing the border into Herzegovina near the towns of Bilece and Trebinje attacking Austraian military targets. They even threatened the port of Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian coastal area. Not sure how strong these groups were or their appearance.

Ranjit.
